Our story, since 1974

Dr. Roy Lanz came home to Pittsburgh in 1974 and opened a practice in Mt. Lebanon. In 2005 his son Matthew joined him, and it became Lanz Associates in Dentistry. Today it is two offices, still working toward one shared vision: uncompromising excellence in dentistry.

Our history

Half a century on Pittsburgh’s South Hills.

One practice on Washington Road grew into two offices. The names on the door changed once, from Dr. Lanz to Lanz Associates, and the standard did not.

  1. 1971

    Dental school, then the Army

    Dr. Roy Lanz earns his DMD at Pitt and serves with the US Army Dental Corps at Fort Bragg.

  2. 1974

    Home to Mt. Lebanon

    He returns to his native Pittsburgh and opens his practice in Mt. Lebanon.

  3. 1984

    The South Hills

    Dr. Thomas DeSantis begins practising family and cosmetic dentistry in the South Hills.

A general practice residency in Youngstown, Ohio, covering implant placement and restoration, advanced oral surgery, endodontics and pediatric dentistry. Placing and restoring implants since 2006, a fellowship at the Misch Institute and the ICOI, and a Diplomate of the International Congress of Oral Implantologists. He has served Pitt as a professor, and lives in Upper St. Clair with his wife Katy, daughter Jillian and son Murphy.

Trained at Pitt's School of Dental Medicine, partly under Dr. Roy. Residency in Cleveland with surgical rotations for advanced procedures and implant placement, and further training in molar endodontics, periodontics and prosthodontics. Before that, a 2nd Lieutenant in the Army National Guard, organising dental screenings for soldiers.

Practising family and cosmetic dentistry in the South Hills since 1984. Dr. Matthew Lanz acquired his practice, and he continues to practise restorative dentistry through Lanz Associates. A Fellow of the Academy of General Dentistry, three terms as Program Chair and President of the Pittsburgh Academy of Dentistry, and selected by his peers as a Pittsburgh Magazine “Top Dentist”.

After dental school he served in the US Army Dental Corps with the 82nd Airborne and the Special Forces groups at Fort Bragg, then came home to Pittsburgh in 1974 and opened his practice in Mt. Lebanon. An adjunct professor at Pitt for thirteen years, he helped organise student mission trips to Jamaica. In 2005 his son joined him and the practice became Lanz Associates in Dentistry.

Four things worth knowing.

No silver fillings

Composite only. It bonds to the tooth, so more of your own tooth is kept, and it is matched to the colour around it.

Crowns chosen by position

All-ceramic on front teeth for the look, the newer all-zirconium crowns on back teeth for strength. Well cared for, they typically last over ten years.

Zoom! whitening

In-office whitening with a light-activated gel. Done in just over an hour, rather than days of wearing trays.

ViziLite screening

Used together with the conventional head and neck examination to find suspicious areas at their earliest stage.

Implant dentistry

Implants, placed and restored here since 2006.

Dr. Matthew Lanz studied at the Misch Institute for Dental Implantology, holds fellowships from the Misch Institute and the ICOI, and is a Diplomate of the International Congress of Oral Implantologists.

  • 1. PlanX-rays and a model of your teeth decide where each implant goes. Occasionally a bone or gum graft is needed first.
  • 2. PlaceThe implant is placed into the bone in a relatively pain-free procedure, then the bone and gums are given time to heal.
  • 3. RestoreAn abutment and crown are attached. In some cases a temporary crown can go on the same day.
  • 4. Full archesSeveral implants can hold a denture steady, and stop the bone loss that loosens traditional dentures.

Your first visit. Relax, we make it easy.

The dentist performs a complete oral examination, looking for decay, gum disease and even oral cancer, and talks you through any treatment you may need.

  1. Plan on one to one and a half hours for the first appointment
  2. Your cleaning happens that day, or at a follow-up, depending on your teeth and gums
  3. Bring any dental x-rays from the last six months; new ones only if necessary
  4. Download the patient forms, fill them in at home and bring them along
  5. Patients under the age of 18 must come with a parent
  6. In pain? Call. Same-day emergency care for swelling, infection, abscesses and broken or lost work

What people ask before they book.

Can I come to your office if you are not a preferred provider?

Everyone is welcome. We process claims from most dental insurance companies and will submit your claims at no cost to you. Coverage varies widely with the plan your employer set up, so check whether yours requires you to stay within an established network.

Which insurance plans do you participate with?

Our own pages list Aetna, Ameritas, Cigna, Delta Dental, Humana, MetLife, United Concordia and UPMC Dental Advantage (not the For Life or For You plans). Plans change, so please call either office to confirm yours before your visit.

My plan says cleanings are covered at 100%. Why did I get a bill?

Insurers pay from fee schedules. What they call usual and customary is what your employer and the insurer negotiated, and it is usually less than what dentists in the area actually charge, so there is typically a portion your plan will not cover.

What is a predetermination?

A written request to your insurer to verify benefits for a specific procedure. It helps estimate what they will pay, but it does not guarantee payment: deductibles, policy changes and other claims can all change the amount.

I am anxious about the dentist. What are my options?

Tell us when you call. IV sedation is offered with an anesthesiologist, so many patients can have all their treatment done in as little as one visit. If IV sedation is not an option, oral sedation is available too.

How long is a first visit, and what should I bring?

Plan on one to one and a half hours. Bring any dental x-rays taken in the last six months, and your insurance details. Patients under 18 must come with a parent.

Something hurts. Can I be seen today?

Call the office nearest you. We offer same-day emergency care for pain, swelling, infection, broken dentures, lost crowns, chipped teeth and loose fillings.
